Whitening methods
- In-office: 45–60 minutes at the clinic, light-assisted, instant results
- At-home: custom trays and gel used at home for 1–2 weeks
- Combined: both together for the longest-lasting result
- Single-tooth whitening: internal whitening for darkened teeth that have had root canal treatment
Before whitening
A scale and polish is done first and any decay is treated. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten; they are renewed after the procedure if necessary.
Afterwards and how long it lasts
For the first 48 hours avoid tea, coffee, smoking and strongly coloured foods. The effect lasts 1–3 years depending on your habits and is easily refreshed with home trays.
Frequently asked questions
Does teeth whitening damage the teeth?
When carried out under a dentist's supervision at the right concentration, it does not harm the enamel. Temporary sensitivity can occur and passes within 1–2 days.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Usually 2–4 shades. Yellowish stains respond better than grey-brown stains.
Who should not have whitening?
It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, people under 16, people with untreated decay or gum disease, and people with severe enamel sensitivity.
