Who can have a dental implant?
- Adults who are missing one or more teeth
- Patients with no teeth who are unhappy with removable dentures (implant-supported fixed prosthesis)
- Patients with sufficient jawbone, or whose bone can be built up to a sufficient level
- Patients whose gum health is under control
How does the treatment proceed?
- Consultation and X-ray assessment; bone volume and general health are examined.
- The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The procedure takes 20–40 minutes and is no more painful than a tooth extraction.
- A 2–3 month period of bonding with the bone (osseointegration). A temporary tooth can be worn during this time.
- An impression is taken and the permanent porcelain or zirconia crown is fitted on the implant.
Benefits of implants
- Neighbouring healthy teeth are not cut down.
- Chewing strength and speech come closest to those of natural teeth.
- Prevents the jawbone from shrinking.
- Can last a lifetime with regular care.
Aftercare for implants
Cold compresses and soft food are recommended on the first day. Smoking delays healing. Brushing twice a day, using interdental brushes and having a check-up every 6 months are the most important factors in how long your implant lasts.
Frequently asked questions
Is dental implant treatment painful?
No. Implants are placed under local anaesthesia, so you feel no pain during the procedure. There may be mild tenderness for 1–2 days afterwards, which passes easily with a painkiller.
How long does implant treatment take?
Placing the implant takes 20–40 minutes. You then wait 2–3 months for it to bond with the bone, after which the permanent tooth is fitted. In suitable cases a temporary tooth can be made on the same day.
Can I have an implant if my bone is insufficient?
In most cases, yes. The bone volume can be increased with procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifting before the implant is placed. This is assessed with an X-ray at the check-up.
How long does an implant last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, an implant can last a lifetime. The crown on top may need renewing after 10–15 years.
What determines the price of an implant?
The implant brand used, the type of crown (porcelain or zirconia), whether bone grafting is needed and the number of implants all affect the price. A clear plan and price are given at the check-up.
